Lately I’ve been trying to get some exercise by walking during my lunch hour at work.  To make the walk a bit more interesting, I walk on a single-lane road that takes one out of town and into some forested park land.  The road also follows a creek some of the way.  It’s fairly scenic for being right outside of the small college town where I work.

Most of the time when I’m walking, I’m looking up and around at all of the plants, trees and birds.  Sometimes I take a gravel path off the road that takes one over a foot bridge that crosses the creek.  It’s fun to get a look at the fish, frogs, etc. from that vantage point.

On the way back on the same gravel path, I noticed this guy:

He (about 2 feet or so long) was pretty chill about me checking him out and didn’t move at all.  I was considering moving him from the walking path, but I figured that since I didn’t seem him the first time I walked by the spot that he was just passing through and would leave quickly when he was ready.

After doing a bit of searching on the web about snakes that are native to Delaware, I settled on the identification that it was a plain-bellied water snake (Nerodia erythrogaster) of some type.  Seems to make sense considering how close it was to water.  The information I found about this snake was mostly from here.
