Pileated woodpeckers are fairly common in our area, but it’s still a fun treat to get a glimpse of one. They seem to be very wary of people and keep their distance.
Imagine my surprise when a pair of them showed right in the forest behind our house recently. They looked like they were doing some sort of dance around a tree trunk. Also, seemed intent on keeping their distance from each other, but not very.
